Acropolis Museum gains the hearts of its visitors

The Acropolis Museum covers a total area of 226,000 sq feet and is designed by the accredited architect Bernard Tschumi; it replaces the old museum that was built in 1874 and is located on the Rock, next to the Parthenon. The Museum features large glass surfaces in order to provide unlimited and panoramic views to the Parthenon from every room and floor.

The new Acropolis museum opened its gates in June 2009 presenting to the world the immense collection of ancient artifacts from the Parthenon and the Acropolis.

Passionately advocated by Melina Mercouri, the dream and vision of all Greeks finally found its place at the new museum, enhancing and backing the demand for the reunion of the Marbles of the Parthenon that are now at the British Museum.

More than 4,000 items in the Acropolis Museum

The New Museum of the Acropolis features more than 4,000 items divided into different collections. The exhibition program spans the history of the Acropolis and its adjacent slopes, from prehistoric times through late antiquity.

The visitors can see today all artifacts and findings, such as the Finds from the slopes of the Acropolis which can be seen due to the glass floors of the museum, or the artifacts from the Archaic Period. The most important parts of the collection are the Caryatids and the balustrade slab from the Athena Nike temple and the marbles and friezes of the Parthenon, the ones still in Greece, complemented by replicas of the metopes and the ones at the British Museum. Fifty meters of the total 160 meters are housed in the Acropolis Museum, and it is the first time in the history that all monuments and sculptures from the Parthenon and Classical Acropolis are put and displayed together.

The Acropolis is the touchstone of the fortunes of Greece and the new museum is here to show the world and its visitors priceless artifacts, in the most proper way to showcase the splendor of the Greek antiquity.
