Attending the Greek Festival in Epidavros
The festival in the Epidavros theater, also known as Greek festival of Drama theater, takes place in Epidavros every July and August.
Most of the productions in Epidavros are theatrical plays, ancient tragedies by Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus, or comedies by Aristophanes.
There are also some English productions, theatrical plays from the international drama literature. In summer 2011, there is a play that comes from the UK and USA – Richard the 3rd with Kevin Spacey, directed by Sam Mendes. Although most plays and productions are in Greek, the production notes are in several different languages as well, so you can always consider watching a Greek show, just to grasp the feeling of ancient Greek tragedies performed in the original site.
After all, the festival in Epidavros dates back to 400BC, when it was inaugurated; given the spectacular setting and the importance of these plays to the world Art scene, it is definitely worth making proper arrangements so as to attend at least one play if you find yourself in Greece during July and August.
And mind you, you will not be the only foreigners there. You will be surprised to see how many people come to watch a performance, despite the fact that they do not understand the language. The experience itself is so memorable, that nothing else can really matter at that time.
You can buy tickets for the festival at the offices of Greek festival in Athens, outside the theater (although most of the times there are no tickets available on the actual day) and online from the website of the festival.
